Forests are some of the most commonly visited landscapes in any D&D or fantasy RPG adventure, and why shouldn’t they? They are awesome, large, fantastical and exhume a beautiful aura of mystical magic. Because of this, I wanted to create a long and comprehensive list of 100 random encounters, so that DMs that have to deal with the unexpected turns of the party, can have something under the sleeve to randomly use.
These encounters range from very basic stuff, like random wolf encounters, to some more dynamic and difficult challenges, like falling into a deadly dungeon. There’s a lot of variety, and, I hope, a lot of interesting encounters and events to use and play through.
Most of these encounters are quite generic, system-wise, but they are mostly created using D&D 5E as a guideline, so all the monsters featured here can be found in that system, and 90% of the rest can be found in any other fantasy system. If D&D has wolves, I’m pretty sure your 70s long-forgotten TTRPG also has them! Well, I hope so.
